Wiz Khalifa Ventures Into the Fungi Frontier
Meet Mistercap's, the latest in celebrity 'shroom shops.
October 6, 2023
Something you may have missed in the never-ending onslaught of celebrity news: Grammy-nominated musician and actor Wiz Khalifa now has his own 'shroom-centric company called Mistercap's.
The newly launched brand is focused on promoting culinary (a.k.a. legal) mushrooms. "People know so little about mushrooms, so my goal with Mistercap's is to showcase the positive benefits and bring them to a wider audience," Khalifa says. The brand’s first offerings are at-home mushroom grow kits because, says Khalifa, “people love growing their own food.”
If you’ve been following this newsletter for a while, you know we love a good grow kit, and these newbies to the market—which come in lion’s mane, shiitake, and oyster mushroom varieties—are no exception. Playful and poppy branding sets them apart from others, and there’s a charitable component, too; 2% of each purchase will be donated to the pro-mushroom educational nonprofit Fungi Foundation.
Like many in this space, Khalifa, who also owns the cannabis company Khalifa Kush, is likely watching the legal landscape with the goal of eventually selling magic mushroom-based products as well. Mistercap's' current partnership with Red Light Holland on production of the grow kits may eventually prove useful to this end, as the Netherlands-based company currently makes microdosing “magic truffles” sold in its famously 'shroom-friendly home country. While the brand hasn’t yet stated this goal outright, Khalifa’s cofounder, Tim Hunkele, has described the grow kits as “a nice, rooted place to start.” We agree!
