Freshly Foraged: Mushroom Makeup
Rituel de Fille’s magical new foundation is the first of its kind to be fueled by fungi.
The beauty industry is officially on 'shrooms. First, fungi infiltrated skin care, spreading their spores into serums, moisturizers, masks, and more. Now, mushrooms are appearing in makeup, too.
Rituel de Fille, a Los Angeles-based natural beauty brand, has just released a new offering fueled by fungi. The brand's 3 Drop Weightless Serum Foundation is the first-ever beauty product to feature an innovative new carotenoid active derived from mycelium, the root-like structure of a fungus.
If you don’t know what any of those words mean, fret not. Essentially, carotenoids are plant-based antioxidants that are extremely beneficial for your skin. Common carotenoids, such as those in carrots, are pigmented, which makes them difficult to include in a makeup product. But Ritual de Fille was able to isolate a uniquely colorless carotenoid called phytoene using a patent-pending process involving mycelial fermentation. The result is a first-of-its-kind active ingredient called JD Phyto-Or 1%™, which wouldn't be possible without the magic of mushrooms.
Inclusion of this potent ingredient means that unlike many other foundations, Rituel de Fille’s 3 Drop Weightless Serum Foundation actually benefits your skin while you wear it. “In clinical trials, JD Phyto-Or 1% has demonstrated significant, measurable improvements in radiance, firmness, elasticity, and evenness of skin tone, while also soothing the skin, protecting from pollution, and supporting the hydro-lipid barrier,” says the brand.
