Reishi Is the Buzzy New Skin-Care Ingredient Even Derms Are Obsessed With
It's the sun-day funday aftercare you'll be slathering on all spring and summer.
The world of skin care cycles through “it” products faster than Love Is Blind contestants break up. Everything from CBD to kale to charcoal has had its moment in the spotlight in recent years, and though some have become derm-approved mainstays, others have proven to be nothing more than passing fads. If your bathroom vanity has become a graveyard for such products, you may be hesitant to add reishi, the buzzy ingredient du jour, into your regimen for fear of falling prey to more meaningless marketing. But dermatologist Anar Mikailov, MD, says the mushroom’s touted benefits to your body’s largest organ are *actually* legit.
Ganoderma lingzhi, also known as reishi, is a brick-brown, kidney-shaped shroom that’s sort of the bell of the adaptogenic mushroom ball (er, boom!). You might know reishi from its extensive use in tinctures, teas, and “nootropic” formulas, where it’s touted for its immune-boosting, cognition-enhancing, and stress-reducing benefits, but reishi is also nourishing for your skin. “Reishi mushroom extracts benefit the skin due to their anti-inflammatory, anti-redness, antioxidant, and anti-wrinkle properties,” says Dr. Mikailov. “They are rich in beta-glucans, which help boost the skin’s immune system and have antioxidant, wound-healing, and anti-aging properties."
If you’ve spent a little too much time in the sunshine, reishi also contains ergothioneine and glutathione to combat the skin-damaging free radicals caused by UV radiation. ”Reishi mushrooms are also rich in polysaccharides, which act as humectants to moisturize the skin,” adds Dr. Mikailov. (Talk about a much-needed one-two punch after you’ve totally spaced on reapplying your sunscreen.)
Reishi’s diverse benefits mean you’ll find it in a myriad of skin-care products on the shelves, but Dr. Mikailov is quick to point out that you’ll reap the most benefits from buying the shrooms in serums and moisturizers—beauty products that sit on your skin for a while rather than getting rinsed away like a cleanser or a face mask.
