Mushroom Grow Kits Are the Easiest Way To Harvest Your Own Food
Green thumb not required.
Over the past few years, folks have crafted their own kombucha, nurtured sourdough starters like infants, and gone bananas for banana bread. They also began growing their own mushrooms; at-home grow kit purveyor North Spore reported a 400 percent increase in sales during the first year of the pandemic alone. Many of these hobbies have since fallen by the wayside as lives have returned to their default too-busy pace, but mushroom growing is a trend with staying power since it requires minimal time investments to yield heaps of table-ready 'shrooms.
Mushrooms are simply easygoing little guys, especially when compared to some of the other vegetation you may have tried growing during what at times felt like the apocalypse. While some plants prefer a lifetime of sunshine, 'shrooms have decidedly darker tastes. They grow best in warm, damp nooks and crannies away from sunshine, so if you have access to a basement, a Harry Potter-esque closet, or a creepy windowless room congrats, you’re ready to become a fungi parent!
Most at-home kits are super low maintenance beyond these low-light requirements, too. It typically takes just two steps to cultivate a harvest. The first is cutting an “X” into the plastic covering on the kit, and the second is spraying that “X” with water every so often. Grow logs are even easier, as they simply require one big H2O soak and an occasional mist thereafter. In other words, even if your houseplants are all dead, you can still find success as a mushroom farmer.
Ready to begin foraging from home? Here are six easy-to-use grow kits that’ll get you going.

Uncommon Goods Oyster Mushroom Log Kit
$
30
USD
Oyster mushrooms are ostensibly the easiest edible mushroom to grow, making them the succulent of the fungi world and a great addition to your indoor garden if you’re not exactly a pro. These mushroom spores are planted on the inside of aspen and poplar trees and delivered to your doorstep ready to flourish. Just place them in a damp, cool, and dark setting and wait for the magic to happen.
Once your shrooms are ready to harvest, you can treat them like a meat substitute and serve them fried, sautéed, or added into pastas, stews, and soups. “Oyster mushrooms are earthy, aromatic, and sweet with a subtle anise finish (like black licorice) when cooked,” says Chef Katie Chin, cookbook author and Asian food expert. ”They taste like button mushrooms when eaten raw.”
