What Mushrooms Mean for the New Year
Many cultures consider the humble mushroom a lucky talisman.
The gifting of mushrooms is a New Year’s tradition in some parts of the world. “Mushrooms are considered lucky and are associated with the holiday season mainly in Germany but also in some other European countries,” says Jennifer Francis, cofounder of the hip, beautifully curated, and conscientious brand Kindred Black. “It most likely became a lucky talisman because the mushroom, as an integral part of the forest ecosystem, represents the beauty and bounty of nature and thus our hope for a plentiful new year.” Mushrooms may also symbolize strong relationships and resilience, she adds—both of which will be needed if 2023 proves to be anything like 2022 (or 2021, or 2020…).
One super thoughtful way to spread lucky spores is by gifting friends, family, colleagues, and maybe even strangers something 'shroomy, like this adorable hand-blown glass mushroom. It’s the perfect surprise for anyone in need of a little encouragement as they head into this new year (i.e. all of us). Happy fungi-filled 2023!
